I put pictures in the photo section of this tribe. The pics are a little out of focus but you cana make out it's details.
It has metallic green eyes and looks kinda like an armored plated cockroach. It was about an inch long and could fly.

I doo. I just had a dream last night with a big cardboard pallet full of tarantulas. I dumped a big pile of crickets on them and before I knew it, there were little cricket pieces all over. And happy Tarantulas!

hummingbird or bug?

I'm not really a bug person, but I'm curious - This morning I saw this bizarre sort of multi-shaded brown flying thing, maybe 1" long, with a long bill, drinking nectar from my flowers. At first I thought this must be a very small hummingbird, but the Wikipedia page on hummingbirds states that they are only found in the Americas, while I am in Northern Thailand. It hung around for quite a while, but of course as soon as my camera was ready to take a shot, he became shy. I'll try to get one tomorrow. Anyone have a clue? Thanx,
killing bugs

i was looking through the postings of a buddhist tribe, and came across a thread about whether or not killing roaches was wrong. there was a varied response.
personally, i think killing roaches is wrong. i cant say that i like them...not the nasty household variety anyways. but i wouldnt kill them. i would just shoo them outside, or more likely get someone else to shoo them outside.
i wont kill an ant if i can help it. even if its in the process of stinging me i take care to gently brush it away (and it actually hurts less since i am not grinding their poison-filled abdomens in to further aggravate the tiny puncture)
but i kill an awful lot of ticks. i think only a jain could hold that against me.
and i must admit, when i am at the environmental center, i take a lot of pleasure in watching my man feed centipedes and crickets to the salamanders and other lizards and turtles. circle of life and everything.
i just wanted to see others perspectives on this. when is it "ok" to kill a bug? (or is it ever ok?)

this is an excerpt from a discussion in the grow organic tribe, can you enlighten us?

"dont think soap would work, cos they live under water, coming up to breathe- thats why the oil might create a barrier they cannot breathe through

still hesitate to cover my barrell with oil though.. I just wonder how it would be after a few days sun on it..and the water level going up and down, would cover the whole barrell.. a bit icky

"alberta alligators"!! eek, sounds vicious. luckily the swiss kind are fairly mild..

what makes a mozzie vicious? Is it the toxin? Is it bacteria present in the toxin? Is it the amount of toxin? Or the amount they drink?
Any insectologists in the house?"

Prodigal Summer

Have you read "Prodigal Summer" by Barbara Kingsolver? The drawings and descriptions of moths (especially the Luna) in that novel are divine!! The story, and natural history lesson abou the Appalachain region is quite amazing too!

"Over the course of one humid summer, as the urge to procreate overtakes a green and profligate countryside, these characters find connections to one another and to the flora and fauna with which they necessarily share a place. Their discoveries are embedded inside countless intimate lessons of biology, the realities of small farming, and the final, urgent truth that humans are only one part of life on earth." http://www.kingsolver.com/bookshelf/prodigal_summer.asp

Hooray! This morning Magbert and Mabel went at it. Actually - some five hours later - they're still at it! I'll post a picture to the group.

I've never seen the female's "shiver" dance and it was extraordinary behavior. Every ten seconds or so she "shakes" from head to tail. Then she starts wagging her abdomen from side to side out from under her wings, then after ten minutes or so he starts doing the same. He jumped at her and she knocked him back, but after a few minutes she allowed him to crawl over her back (!) to position himself, then twists his abdomen so that they can mate.

After an hour or so she crawled to a more private spot, where they've remained motionless ever since. Fascinating creatures.

Here where I live in the Ecuadorean Amazon, there is a large firefly with THREE LIGHTS. On its chest is an orange light that looks like a cigarette in the dark. On its shoulders are two ''headlights'' that look like glowing eyes -- which change color from greenish to yellowish to orangish to white, and which can glow separately or together. The shoulder headlights can do their thing whether the firefly is flying or sitting/walking. Anyone ever heard of this bug?

California scorpion keepable? (alive)

I know it's not an insect, but where else do I ask? :)

I think it's one of these:
Paruroctonus silvestrii (Borelli, 1909)

http://www.angelfire.com/tx4/scorpiones/p_silvestrii251.jpg
http://www.angelfire.com/tx4/scorpiones/psilvesGL.jpg

Distribution: California, USA and Baja California Norte, Mexico, from Progreso, Baja California Norte, to Marin County and Lake Tahoe, California.
Fairly common in almost every habitat in its range, from coastal dunes to high-elevation conifer forests.

I found it in my pants by my bed this morning as I put them on getting out of bed. Halarity ensued and I got a light bite or pinch and everything (not even noticable now). I was writing a big long telling of the incident, but some wierd browser thing happened and I don't have the energy to rewrite it all tonight.

Anyway he seems to be fine at the moment, he's in a little plastic terrarium with fibrus, woody potting soil and some dry leaves for some cover. I put some water in a small puddle in a corner and he seemed to go to it after only a minute or two and drank until it's belly was quite plump! I put in two small (5mm) crickets from PetCo he might have eaten one, cuz I haven't seem both in a while. He's about 2 inches/50mm from claws to tip of tail if he streched out. Do these things eat prey, or just suck the inside out? I'm hoping to monitor his intake and I want to know if a dead cricket means a successfull meal or just a dead cricket. I'm not too keen on the feeding crickets thing. I could never use live bait as a kid when fishing! (nor could I do anything but release the fish.) But I've read only live food works with scorpions. He's really cool looking and is fascinating to watch.

Anyone know about this? Scorpion care and or any info on this particular one? I'll see about posting a pic tomorrow. Scopions are commonly had as pets with success and breeding isn't uncommon. But I don't want to try this if it's not got a good chance of living well, or if these are not common and are better left in the wild. It seems like this is the common Californian scorpion.

Any input?

Name that bug!

Well, I have a bug in my home that I'm very curious about. I'm relatively new to Missouri, and haven't paid much attention to the insect population since I've lived here over the past few years. My landlord, upon moving into my apartment, was very paranoid about getting bugs. He's apparently had them before. Once spring hit, we started to see small, brown, almost trangular shaped flying insects hovering about the place. They didn't seem to be interested in any open food, they were just "hanging out" as far as I could tell. I started wondering where they were coming from, but couldn't find any clues. One night, I witnessed two apparently mating near my cieling fan. Disturbed by my prying, they flew onto a nearby wall, ajoined the entire way from behind. I was pretty impressed that they could keep their wings in rhythm to make the flight. Then, a few days ago, I started noticing tiny little brown bugs, about the size of a pin head, laying on their backs in my bathroom on the windowsill. They appeared to be dead, but when I blew on them, they uprighted themselves and walked about briefly. They are about the size of a pin head. I decided to get some pictures of them, and found that they had very attractive patterns. The smallest of them are a uniform dull brown, but the larger, and I'm assuming more mature, have rough stripes running opposite to their body length. Here are some photos! Anyone know what these are?

personally, i think i'm more a bee type. i definitely have a habit of pollinating others, by motivating them to blossom and whatnot. i also have a hive sensibility, always looking out for others on the homefront.
and right now my hair is yellow.
so yeah....a honey bee

Hi all,
just wondering how many of you shop for bugs online and what are your favorite websites? Every time I try a search for places that sell insects online, I just get sites from the UK.

Are there any good sites in the US? I know about the Vivarium cause it's local to me, but are there any others you can recommend?

Thanks in advance.

My poor praying mantis came to the end of his tiny lifespan this morning and I enjoyed him so much, I wanted to get a new one.

I asked someone at the Petco store where I got my first mantis, and they said they aren't allowed to carry them anymore because of some CA Dept. of Fish and Game regulation.

Anyone hear of this and does anyone know where I can get another mantis?

mantis

okay, so I've had quite a few giant insets before as pets.
but the one I really want is a preying mantis. i've loved them since I was a small child and saw a huge one on a wall outdoors.

I'm fully prepared to "grow my own" from mantis eggs at the local greenhouse. the problem is, when they just hatch and they are tiny, is there any feeder insect I can buy that would be small enough?

I had an idea of hatching them outdoors....in an old fishtank.... covered with a mesh small enough that birds could not get in, but fruit flies could, and placeing a banna peel in the tank to attract them.
also, will the be able to eat each other and grow that way?
we have a pretty good crop of aphids (sp?) but since my mother sprays the garden, I wouldn't want any pesticide coming in contact with my babies.
then I was going to take the best of them and release the others in a (relatvely, no place is safe these days)pesticide free place.

any knowlegde on the subject would be much apreciated :)
Insect ordering: Dead specimens for artists and collectors. (Way cheaper than the Bone Room)

We all love the Bone Room, and Paxton Gate and such places, but really, if you are a collector or an artist who wants unspread bugs in any large quantity or a really rare or expensive specimen, you should order them from the source!!! There is an amazing place called Insects International, run by two brothers, Rod and Greg, in a little town in Texas. You can find them online, but you should request a catalog and mailing list updates to get the full selection. They have hundreds of thousands of different insects/spiders/etc. I even got some vials of leeches from them recently! They also will sometimes have specials on bulk items, too...I used to teach insect mounting classes, and have been planning on starting up my own shop here in Austin, but I'm not above sharing with other bug lovers where the stores actually go to get their specimens that they then double in price. If you don't know how to spread insects, however, or don't have a TON of patience, then you should stick with The Bone Room, or Paxton Gate. (Personally, I like Paxton Gate the best of any store I have ever seen, but I'm partial, because I worked there for a long time.)

I needed to brag somewhere, I figured here was as good a place as any: the other day my boss just gives me this bracelet, out of nowhere, that she made by casting stickbugs (Phasmatidids, not Emesinids, which we always called stickbugs as a kid) in silver: how rad is that! It's neat and amorphous looking at first, and if you look closer you can see the little legs and heads and segmented hinies. I have two pictures on my 'pictures' thing on my profile, but they're kind of crappy. Random insect gifts are the best!!!

my man works at an environmental center where animals are kept (to show & teach children about nature)...
well, they had this rabbit cage set up in the garden, with a big bucket underneath set up to collect bunny turds for use in compost. one day while emptying out the bucket he found a very weak & sickly rat stuck to the bottom. somehow he had ended up buried in this pile of shit, unable to get out.
as jake watched him and contemplated feeding him to one of the snakes they keep there, he noticed a fat red grub wiggling around by the rats ass. as he peered closer, he saw a few black holes - abscesses(?) - around the rats posterior area. then, another big fat red grub poked its head out of one of the holes.
jake was so disgusted, and felt so sorry for the rat that he put it out of its misery right away. he said that a bunch of the grub-things scattered because of his actions.
ugh. i do love bugs but parasites make me want to scream.
i didnt mean to have my first post sound so anti-insect, but i thought it was really interesting. :P

I ADORE these cute little guys. They live in the dirt.

Stenopelmatus fuscus - one of the largest insects in southern California, often exceeding two inches (50 mm) in length. It belongs to the Order Orthoptera along with grasshoppers, katydids and true crickets. This cricket relative is actually capable of making a rudimentary sound by rubbing the inner surface of its hind leg against short spines projecting from the side of its abdomen. Because of its large, bald "baby face," it is also known as "child of the earth" or "ñina de la tierra." Its large size and humanoid head has caused this insect to be the object of superstition and fear by some southwestern and Mexican Indians. Navajo people call it "woh-seh-tsinni," which means "old bald-headed man. NOT poisonous or dangerous.

cockroach stories.....

when i was in costa rica, i saw a cockroach the size of my hand crawling on the wall behind me. even when my boyfriend told me that he was a flying kind, i just sat there and watched him. i thought he was beautiful. now, if it had been an average north american household cockroach, i would have run far and fast.
when i was little (6 or so) my parents had gotten a divorce and my mom was struggling to make ends meet. we moved into a tiny apartment in a ghetto-ass neighberhood. it turns out our apartment was infested with roaches. but when my mom would call a fumigator, they would disappear for a couple of weeks and then they would be back in full (my mom suspects they had passages to the next apartment and would go back and forth depending on who had called an exterminator)...i remember one night, lying in bed and watching the ceiling above me. as my eyes got adjusted to the darkness i counted 17 roaches right above my head. when we ate dinner at night we had to keep our legs tucked up beneath us. my sister and i shared a room, and one time i looked over and saw one crawling on her face. he stopped right on her forehead and stayed put for a while. i didnt make a sound becasue i didnt want her to wake up screaming. (it was not until years later that i learned cockroaches will eat the eyebrows right off of your face)
years later, in another apartment (this one not infested but every now and then...) i was drinking a can of soda. i left it on the kitchen counter for a while, and when i came back i went to take a sip. when the soda went into my mouth i also felt something else go in, and it tickled my tongue. i spit out the soda and dumped out the can and a huge nasty roach was stuck inside (only his abdomen stuck out of the can)
anyways, i have noticed that everyone and their mother has a good roach story or two, so here is the thread to share them.
