I'm not really a bug person, but I'm curious - This morning I saw this bizarre sort of multi-shaded brown flying thing, maybe 1" long, with a long bill, drinking nectar from my flowers. At first I thought this must be a very small hummingbird, but the Wikipedia page on hummingbirds states that they are only found in the Americas, while I am in Northern Thailand. It hung around for quite a while, but of course as soon as my camera was ready to take a shot, he became shy. I'll try to get one tomorrow. Anyone have a clue? Thanx,
J

Re: hummingbird or bug?
Wed, April 4, 2007 - 9:19 AMHi Jake! It is possible that what you saw was a moth. I don't know what is native to your area, but here in the States we have Hummingbird Moths www.birds-n-garden.com/hummin...hs.html . They are usually about the size you described... the ones I am familiar with have nearly transparent wings and hover around feeding, just like a hummingbird would. They are pretty tricky to get a photo of... I have been trying for a couple of years now with moderate success. But I like having them around. Keep an eye on whatever plant it was feeding on... you'll probably see it again. -

Sat, April 7, 2007 - 1:19 AMthanks, loaf - that's definitely it! Who would've thought it was a moth. I haven't seen it again yet, but you can bet I'll try to get a photo of it if I do. -

Fri, June 8, 2007 - 3:59 PMI love those moths!
Unfortunately, so do our cats. They make a loud crunching sound when chewed upon. -

First time I discovered that, I was startled to say the least. :-DDD
